EX-INTERNATIONALS IN EXHIBITION MATCH TO RAISE FUNDS FOR CHARITY
A TEAM of former Malaysian international cricketers will take on the touring Haberdashers' Aske's School of Hertfordshire, England in an exhibition-cum-charity fund raiser at the Kinrara Oval in Puchong today.
The former internationals including Karu Selvaratnam will be joined by AirAsia group chief executive officer Datuk Tony Fernandes in the Lord's Taverners Malaysia President's XI against the Haberdashers team of Under-17 schoolboys for the AirAsia Challenge Trophy.
Organising spokesman Chris Syer said the match, to be played over 35 overs, will be a day-night affair beginning at 3pm.
"The other interesting thing to note is that the Haberdashers will donate STG1,000 (RM5,600) to a Malaysian charity through the Lord's Taverners Malaysia.
"The tour is more than just about playing cricket for the Haberdasher boys as it is also an educational trip for them to get to know Malaysian culture better," said Syer.
Malaysian Cricket Association president Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja'afar will accept the donation on behalf of the Lord's Taverners.
Another feature of the match is the use of a pink ball, which the International Cricket Council is experimenting with at selected matches around the world. -- DEVINDER SINGH

RUN IN THE NAME OF CHARITY
CHARITY does not necessarily begin at home. THE Haberdashers' Aske's School in London have pledged 1000 Pounds Sterling (RM 5,715) for the Lord Taverners Charity Hash Run scheduled on Saturday.
The pledge was made by Haberdashers' Aske's cricket master Doug Yeabsley recently.
"On behalf of the boys, may I congratulate the Lord Taverners and the PJ Club on their initiative in organising such a fun event on behalf of disadvantaged children," said Yeabsley.
"We are so fortunate to be able to travel overseas and visit Malaysia and I am delighted to pledge 1000 Pound Sterling from our Tour Fund for such a worthy cause."
The Tour Fund was raised by the 20 boys who will be coming to Malaysia in October for a series of friendly matches against the local cricket clubs.
The contribution was very much welcomed by the organisers who had earlier received 400 Pound Sterling (RM 2,288) from the Old Bedfordians Touring XI based in UK.
The Hash Run is organised to raise funds for charitable organisations and underprivileged youths. The run starts from the PJ Club at 4pm. For more information, kindly contact Thiru at 012-2092017 or Deva at 012-3732922.

LORD'S TAVERNERS CHARITY HASH RUN'S KITTY GETS A 400 POUND BOOST FROM ENGLAND
Mr. Mike Roberts, former writer with the London Sunday Times and captain of The Old Bedfordians Touring XI in a telephone interview from the United Kingdom, congratulated the organisers of Lord's Taverners Charity Hash Run 2009. The organisers were then pleasantly surprised by the good news that Mike and his colleagues were contributing 400 pounds towards a very worthwhile cause.
The Old Bedfordians Touring XI - named after a journalist's pub in Bedford Square, London and not associated in any way with Bedford College - which started in 1975 comprised of a team of journalists, artists, publishers, actors and advertising executives who despite their varying cricketing skills shared one thing in common - a love for the game, and an enthusiasm that carried through, both on and off the pitch. According to Mike, they only play 2 or 3 games a year, have no ground themselves, and since 1993 have always played one annual fixture abroad. Since 1993, The Old Bedfordians Touring XI have clocked up well over 100,000 miles as evidenced on our website http://members.lycos.co.uk/oldbeds that lists the number of tours up to 2006. They include Cuba, Chile, Goa, Viietnam, Bali, Australia, Argentina, and Thailand. They toured Zanzibar in 2007 and Morocco in 2008.
Mike believes that given that the average age is nearer 50 than 40, "our abilities are rather of a 'village green' level but the enthusiasm is still there! We are also very keen on 'putting back' something into the game that has given us so much pleasure, and usually try and involve a charity angle in our matches".

SCHOOL BOYS FROM ENGLAND PLEDGE 1,000 POUNDS TO HELP UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN IN MALAYSIA
I am delighted to inform you that HABERDASHERS' ASKE'S SCHOOL in London, who will playing the PJ Club as part of the itinerary during their tour of Malaysia in October, on learning of the Charity Run in June have immediately pledged 1,000 pounds from their Tour Fund.
The pledge was made by Mr. Doug Yeabsley, Haberdashers' Aske's cricket master and Tour Manager, when he learnt of the run during in a recent telephone conversation. In the words of Mr. Doug, "on behalf of the boys, may I congratulate the Lord's Taverners and the PJ Club on their initiative in organising such a fun event on behalf of disadvantaged children. We are so fortunate to be able to travel overseas and visit Malaysia and I am delighted to pledge 1,000 pounds from the Haberdashers' Aske's Tour Fund to such a worthy cause. Although we can not be there ourselves we wish you every success on 13 June 2009 and look forward to seeing you all in October."
For the uninitiated, The Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School was founded in 1697 (312 years ago!) and is currently located at Aldenham House, Elstree, Hertfordshire, England with over 1,000 students. The Touring Fund was raised entirely by the 20 boys who will be coming to Malaysia in October. They washed cars, ran bazaars, jumble sales, held dances and various other activities to reach their target of over 20,000 pounds. The fact that they are generously donating 1,000 pounds from the money raised for the Tour to help underprivileged children in Malaysia is really a very humane act of kindness. This unselfish gesture is certainly a noble value that which we can all learn from!
